The play is about a family and a city, both of which are in the process of being marginalized by the march of history. It celebrates the warmth and pull of an extended family and a self-regarding, cohesive community, even as it shows how that community can turn in on itself and ostracize its rebels. The rise and fall of Buffalo as a major city in the United States is echoed in the various actions and responses of a particular family as the country slides into World War II.
